French aristocrats Viscount Albert de Morcerf and Baron Franz d'Epinay attended the Carnival festival on Luna's moon city in the year 5053. Although Franz is only looking for pleasure, Albert is searching for something more to fill his life, but he finds more than he has been negotiating for in The Count of Monte Cristo, a mysterious and charming self-made nobleman who meets his gaze during an opera.Albert meets the Count over a few twists and turns and welcomes him into French society. Nevertheless, the Count has more on his mind than just friendship; he is plotting to eventually unleash his revenge on those who had wronged him years before.

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristoa is a Gonzo-produced science fiction anime series. An adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo, the 24-episode series premiered on Japanese television between October 2004 and March 2005; it was first licensed by Geneon Entertainment for a Western release, and later by Funimation. The series was adapted into a CD drama, a screenwriter Shuichi Kouyama trilogy of novels, and a manga written and drawn by series creator Mahiro Maeda running from 2005 to 2008.
Set in the year 5053, the show focuses on the effect of the titular count: formerly a sailor called Edmund Dantes, his friends betrayed him and he was imprisoned on false charges.

Helped by a mysterious force called "Gankutsuou," Dantes fled and refashioned himself as the count, determined to take revenge on those who did him wrong.The series is told primarily from the viewpoint of Viscount Albert de Morcerf, the son of one of the Count's rivals. Although the show adapts much of the original narrative and carries on its vengeance theme, the plot and characters contain many variations.
Initially conceived as an adaptation of Alfred Bester's The Stars My Destination, the copyright holders' refusal to accept an adaptationFashion designer Anna Sui worked on costume designs. Original music was co-arranged by the English band The Stranglers' Jean-Jacques Burnel who also arranged and sang the key themes.
