In the 0071 era of Cosmic Era, amidst a devastating conflict, a cataclysmic clash between two technologically advanced mobile suits ravages a once-neutral territory, leaving nothing but grim devastation in its wake. Tragically, this merciless encounter claims the lives of Shinn Asuka's beloved family, compelling him to seek retribution against the Earth's Natural forces whom he firmly believes are responsible for this unspeakable tragedy. Driven by an unyielding thirst for justice, Shinn's relentless determination propels him through the ranks of the formidable ZAFT military, ultimately granting him control over the groundbreaking Impulse mobile suit prototype. Meanwhile, Athrun Zala, a seasoned veteran of the recent war, discovers himself entangled in a fresh wave of conflict between the Naturals and the Coordinators – genetically enhanced humans despised by the Naturals for their innate biological advantages. As the flames of this new war intensify and violence looms ominously, Athrun undertakes the arduous task of mentoring the embittered Shinn, guiding him away from the treacherous path of relentless vengeance and towards a mindset tempered with compassion and mercy. Together, they must strive to find a balance amidst the chaos, before Shinn's seething wrath consumes him completely.
The remarkable series emerged victorious not once, but twice, clinching the prestigious Animage Anime Grand Prix award in both 2004 and 2005. The HD Remaster of Gundam SEED DESTINY, although it has made a slight alteration by omitting episode 41 from the original sequence, compensates for it by including an exhilarating Final Plus episode split between episodes 49 and 50, ensuring a grand total of 50 enthralling episodes.
