An unprecedented catastrophe, leaving people devoid of their identities, their ability to communicate, and plunging humanity into disarray. Amidst the calamity, a fortuitous encounter takes place within the confines of a military research facility, where our protagonist crosses paths with young Johnny – an exceptional recipient of experimental memory augmentation treatments, allowing him to retain his own personal history while others remain in oblivion. Bestowing upon our main character the name Wataru, Johnny endeavors to equip him with vital knowledge before succumbing to a frail physical condition. Driven by an insatiable curiosity, Wataru embarks on a quest to locate others who might share a similar fate. It is in the vibrant cityscape of San Francisco that fate intertwines his path with that of an enigmatic silver-haired woman named Sophia, who guards her past with a resolute silence. Seeking solace in one another's company, Sophia reveals her intended destination to be New York, and thus a partnership forged on uncertain grounds propels them forwards. Traversing the vast expanse of America, their journey unravels the mysteries of a shattered society, while unearthing profound insights into the very essence of what makes us human.
