As Tokiko explains, the Kakugane is an alchemical system that, when triggered, takes some shape, depending on the user of the Kakugane, forming a special Buso Renkin. The only weapon that can kill a homunculus creature is the Buso Renkin. With this, Kazuki makes his own Buso Renkin (a massive lance called the "Sunlight Heart"). Kazuki enters the war against the homunculi and their master along with Tokiko and her own Buso Renkin (the "Valkyrie Hat," an execution scythe).

A coffin floating down the Seine River is found in Paris, in the 18th century.
