The space colony Heliopolis remains neutral in the great war raging across the galaxy between Coordinators, human beings whose biological traits have been altered before birth, and Naturals, people who remain unaltered on the planet Earth, in the year Cosmic Era 0071. The Naturals' aversion to the Coordinators drove the advanced beings into space, where they sought refuge in artificial colonies.
Kira Yamato is a Coordinator and university student on Heliopolis when his life is turned upside down when ZAFT, a rebellious Coordinator-led military organization, attacks the colony in an attempt to steal a set of five state-of-the-art military mobile suits known as Gundams.
While ZAFT manages to escape with four of the mobile suits, Kira takes command of the Strike, the final Gundam. Kira and his college friends survive the battle and join the crew of the Archangel, an Earth Alliance ship, where the young soldiers learn about the horrors of war and the loss that comes with it.
Yoshikazu Yasuhiko's manga series Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin (Japanese: THE ORIGIN, Hepburn: Kid Senshi Gandamu Ji Orijin) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by him. It's a retelling of the Mobile Suit Gundam story from 1979, for which Yasuhiko was the original character designer. Sunrise produced an original video animation adaptation of the manga that focused on the stories of Casval Rem Deikun (better known as Char Aznable) and his sister Artesia (aka Sayla Mass) and was released in six parts between 2015 and 2018. The adaptation was directed by Sunrise veteran Takashi Imanishi and scripted by Katsuyuki Sumisawa, with Yasuhiko as the chief director. In 2019, NHK General TV aired a 13-episode anime television "recompilation" of the OVAs.
