The space colony Heliopolis remains neutral in the great war raging across the galaxy between Coordinators, human beings whose biological traits have been altered before birth, and Naturals, people who remain unaltered on the planet Earth, in the year Cosmic Era 0071. The Naturals' aversion to the Coordinators drove the advanced beings into space, where they sought refuge in artificial colonies.
Kira Yamato is a Coordinator and university student on Heliopolis when his life is turned upside down when ZAFT, a rebellious Coordinator-led military organization, attacks the colony in an attempt to steal a set of five state-of-the-art military mobile suits known as Gundams.
While ZAFT manages to escape with four of the mobile suits, Kira takes command of the Strike, the final Gundam. Kira and his college friends survive the battle and join the crew of the Archangel, an Earth Alliance ship, where the young soldiers learn about the horrors of war and the loss that comes with it.

Kazuhiro Furuhashi directed the film. Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn RE:0096, a television recompilation of the anime adaptation, began airing on April 3, 2016, replacing Brave Beats and becoming the first Gundam series to air on TV Asahi since After War Gundam X, which ended in 1996. Beginning on January 8, 2017, Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn RE:0096 aired in the United States on Adult Swim's Toonami programming block. Phoenix Hunting, the 11th novel volume, was loosely adapted as a Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative animated film in 2018.
