The godly ability to control matter remotely turned many wielders of power into abuse, causing a long period of upheaval. Finally, after a tumultuous period marked by the rise and fall of authoritarian regimes, the psychic humans were able to attain a fragile peace by isolating their culture and establishing a new world bound by complex laws.
Saki Watanabe, 12, has just awakened to her powers in the town of Kamisu 66, and is delighted to join her peers, the mischievous Satoru Asahina, the timid Mamoru Itou, the happy Maria Akizuki, and Shun Aonuma, a mysterious boy that Saki admires at the Sage Academy, a special school for psychics.

However, unease is looming as Saki starts to doubt the fate of those unable to awaken to their powers, and the children begin to engage in mysterious matters such as the alleged kidnapping of children by the Tainted Cats said. Shinsekai yori tells Saki and her friends 'special, coming-of-age tale as they journey to develop into their place in the supposed utopia.
However, embracing these positions may not be easy in the face of society's dark and disturbing realities, and the imminent chaos born from the modern age..
