Argument
In the wake of the Taishou era, the tanuki's mischievous reign came to an abrupt halt. These crafty raccoon dogs, famed for their shape-shifting abilities, had once reveled in deceiving unsuspecting humans. But alas, their artful tricks were rendered obsolete by the relentless march of technological advancements. However, in the depths of this fading tradition, a resilient young tanuki named Mameda dared to defy the odds. Driven by an unwavering determination to follow in her father's footsteps, Mameda embarked on a transformative journey, setting her sights on the vibrant city of Osaka. Brimming with conviction, she sought to revive the ancient ballet of ruses and hoodwinks, aiming to once again tangle humans in her elegant web of trickery. Yet, as the wise soothsayers of her village had forewarned, the outcome proved bleak. Mameda's intricate deceptions fell flat, cascading into a sea of disappointment. Her every attempt was met with scorn and a chase ensues, with an irate mob hot on her heels. Fleeing in desperation, she stumbles upon a haven within the hallowed halls of a grand theater, where her destiny awaits. Within this sanctuary, a serendipitous encounter unfolds. Mameda finds herself captivated by the mesmerizing artistry of rakugo, a traditional form of storytelling. Entranced by the masterful theatrics and vivid narratives spun by the rakugoka, she is consumed by a fervent desire to master this captivating craft. And so, with audacity and resolve pulsating within her, Mameda resolves to become the trusted apprentice of the esteemed Bunko Daikokutei, a renowned rakugo maestro. Initially skeptical and apprehensive about taking on a disciple, Bunko's icy facade begins to melt upon witnessing Mameda's formidable determination. And thus, the arduous journey of apprenticeship commences. Juggling her rigorous taiko training, all-encompassing theater responsibilities, and the rigorous task of committing plays to memory, Mameda delves headfirst into honing her skills. For only by mastering the prodigious art of rakugo can she hope to reclaim the lost glory of beguiling and bewildering the unsuspecting masses.
