Hoshi no Koe is a tale of long-distance love and mail messages between a boy and girl, using complete 2D and 3D digital animation. Set in 2046 after the discovery on Mars of the remains of an alien civilization, man has been able to make technological advances and plans to send an expedition into space in the coming year. Mikako Nagamine and Noboru Terao are high school graduates. When Noboru joins senior high next year, however, Mikako is selected to join the space expedition.

Voices of a Distant Star ( Japanese: ほしのこえ, Hepburn: Hoshi no Koe, lit. "Voices of a Star" ) is a short film created and directed by Makoto Shinkai in Japanese science fiction, original video animation. It follows the lives of two close friends of childhood, a boy and a girl, who get separated until the girl is sent into space to fight in an alien war. When the 15-year-old girl goes deeper and further into space, the messages she sends take longer to reach the Earth; the film follows her struggles simultaneously and the life of the boy when he receives her messages over time.
The OVA premiered in advance screening in Japan in February 2002.
Two DVD releases followed on April 19, and October 6, 2002. ADV Films has licensed the OVA for distribution in North America and the United Kingdom, it has been released by Madman Entertainment for Australasia and by Anime Limited for UK. For bundled work it won the Animation Kobe award in 2002. This has also received the 2003 Seiun Best Media Award. Critics, who praised its artistic aspect, storyline, and music, received it very positively; however, the English-language version was criticized for its dubbing.
Pioneer LDC adapted the OVA to a drama CD, and a novel was written by Waku, illustrated by Makoto Shinkai and Kou Yaginuma, and published by the MF Bunko J imprint of Media Factory.
Makoto Shinkai adapted an OVA manga drawn by Mizu Sahara; Kodansha serialized it in his April 2004 manga magazine, Afternoon, and published the manga on February 23, 2005 as a one-shot. The manga was licensed by Tokyopop for a North American release, which was released on 1 August 2006..
